Fifth Season has created a different kind of world for our food. Their plants grow up in a happy home, made so by robotics and cutting-edge AI to deliver less waste and more freshness.
The entire Fifth Season team is driven to do right by our planet. By reducing land and water use, they are sowing the seeds toward a more sustainable food system. The indoor farm uses 97% less land and 95% less water than traditional farming.
In order to create an optimal indoor farming environment, Fifth Season needs to ensure cheap, clean and reliable power. Scale’s system allows them to have resiliency and reliability while also reducing their overall emissions and saving them money. Best of all–they aren’t responsible for it. Scale owns and operates the system.
Big Picture Impact
Microgrid Capacity at Fifth Season
The modular microgrid that Scale designed is a game-changing behind the meter system that utilizes a combination of photovoltaic solar panels, lithium ion batteries, and a natural gas generator outfitted with advanced emissions control technology.

"Scale Microgrids has provided to us a turnkey system that has improved our operation's resiliency and independence from external disruptions that are out of our control. It has been an essential addition to our facility that has kept uptimes high, peak demands low, and sensitive inventory undisturbed. We are grateful for the opportunity to have worked with SMS through this project."
In addition to reducing the facility’s GHG emissions footprint by the equivalent of 39 passenger vehicles driven in a year, the system operates in various ancillary services to the electric grid to help save them money, and will enable mission critical operations to continue during utility outages.
