Your comprehensive source for electrifying your fleet.

Scale helps power fleets with affordable, reliable, zero-carbon energy with our end-to-end charging infrastructure solution.

We design, finance, and integrate EV infrastructure with onsite solar, energy storage, and backup power systems. Our systems function in parallel with the utility to provide energy savings, while also giving fleets the ability to enter island mode during grid outages to provide complete reliability and resiliency. This comprehensive solution minimizes costs, streamlines deployment, and enables 24/7 mission-critical operations.

The Inflation Reduction Act includes several tax credit programs that de-risk the transition to EV's, making fleet electrification projects more financially feasible to US businesses.

What is a microgrid?

We design, finance, and integrate EV infrastructure with onsite solar, energy storage, and backup power generation systems. This comprehensive solution minimizes costs, streamlines deployment, and enables 24/7 mission-critical operations.

A microgrid supports your EV charging infrastructure by integrating these distributed energy technologies into a single controllable solution.

How it works

During a normal day, your facility receives energy from a combination of the utility and the on-site cleantech energy resources. The microgrid smart controls know when the utility costs are highest or if there is an outage, proactively switching to the cheapest energy source.

Why a Microgrid?

Why a Microgrid?

Increased Resilience

The system provides on-site power with multiple backup systems, ensuring that fleets are fully operational when the grid fails.

Smart Systems That Adapt To Your Needs

The system includes smart controls designed to reduce demand charges and deliver the most affordable power, optimizing charging via hardware and software solutions.

Fixed Fuel Costs

Microgrids often carry contracts with fixed charging costs, eliminating the issue of volatile utility price hikes and ensuring easier long-term planning.

Why Scale?

Why Scale?

One Stop Shop

We manage everything from design and engineering to construction, simplifying the process and expediting delivery.

$0 Upfront Capital Requirement

Scale offers a microgrid financing that requires $0 upfront investment from customers. Fleets can therefore deploy electric vehicles and tap into clean energy with minimal capital requirement.

No Maintenance Costs

Scale owns, operates, and maintains the equipment, empowering our customers to focus on their core operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Scale Microgrid for Fleet Electrification include the required charging infrastructure?

Yes. We have existing relationships with all of the major charger OEMs and can package the charging infrastructure into our “As-a-Service” offering either directly or through collaboration with a charging partner. We are charger agnostic for our customers in order to meet each fleet and site's unique needs and operations.

Do I need a microgrid for my Fleet Electrification project?

The need for a microgrid will depend on the site's unique characteristics and customers' operations. Building a Fleet Electrification project on the microgrid platform allows the customer to build flexibility into their fleet transition while continuing to provide clean and resilient energy over time. Some smaller fleets or those that have no concerns around energy resilience can utilize only portions of our offering, like solar or battery storage, but Scale will work with these customers to identify the best path forward.

If we plan to phase-in EVs over time, how are the microgrid design and long-term operations affected?

Building on the microgrid platform allows the phasing-in of EVs over time to occur in a more cost-effective manner. We can utilize the same construction period to “pre-install” electrical infrastructure for future charging infrastructure, as well as plan out the optimal times to increase the amount of solar and/or stationary battery storage on site. Because the microgrid can adjust to new loads and new generation assets easily, the system will always operate at its most optimal, even as operators transition additional vehicles to electric. Having an idea of the end goal of vehicle electrification in mind upfront allows Scale to plan out future infrastructure deployments in a more cost-effective way when compared to installing chargers on an as-needed basis.

Does the Microgrid support the Site and the Fleet or just the Fleet?

Currently, the rules in certain utility territories mandate that EV fleets require a new service to utilize the EV-specific tariff. This complicates the process of designing the microgrid, but does not rule out the use case. At present, we can design a microgrid that supports just the fleet to utilize the EV tariff, or we can design a full-site microgrid with the fleet included utilizing a traditional tariff. In some unique cases, we would deploy two separate microgrids on site to support the site and the fleet, but in general it is always better to combine them into a single service. Our project with the VTA is an example of a microgrid that only supports the fleet, while our project with QCD has added the charging infrastructure to the existing service without the need for a service upgrade.
