To meet rising demand, Mettler-Toledo Rainin is adding production capacity, but the energy intensity of its manufacturing process could add massive new demand charges to its electricity costs. Moreover, the perennial risk of both planned and unplanned power outages in the region led the company to seek ways to protect its high-value production with a more reliable, resilient power supply.
Scale is designing a microgrid to address these issues with on-site solar, battery storage, and smart controls. Thanks to the low-cost solar and optimized battery dispatch, the facility will achieve substantial bill savings and carbon reductions - a significant benefit for customers concerned about supply chain emissions. The microgrid will also enable the facility to continue operating during grid outages, with up to 24 hours of backup capacity.

The Mettler-Toledo Microgrid
The Mettler-Toledo Rainin microgrid will include 750 kW of rooftop solar, 530 kW/2121 kWh of battery storage, and a 4000 amp microgrid switchboard. Scale will own and operate the microgrid under a microgrid service agreement (MSA), with 24/7/365 remote monitoring and maintenance to ensure reliability.
The MSA also eliminates up-front costs for Mettler-Toledo Rainin, replacing a large capital expense with a monthly service fee. This will enable the company to realize electricity bill savings from day one, with Scale operating the system to avoid excess demand charges by drawing on the battery during hours of peak load.
